Silicones
for Everyday Use
Silicones have become an indispensable
part of all our modern conveniences. They are found everywhere – in
stylish watches, television sets and even champagne corks.

The
television set is one product that is full of silicones.
Even the vacuum pumps used for evacuating television
tubes as they are being made are operated with silicone
fluids .
Furthermore, the anode caps are made from flame-resistant silicone rubber.

Because of its excellent dermatological
compatibility, silicone
rubber is the material of choice
for artistic modern watch straps.
The vast range of colors and patterns ensures that each
strap is unique. |

The
use of silicone-based release agents for wine corks
is only a recent phenomenon. Psychological barriers
have so far prevented silicones from gaining total
acceptance within the sparkling wine and champagne
industry despite being free of solvents and non-toxic.
As photomicrographs show, the release agent rounds
off the pores of the cork. This allows the cork
to be removed smoothly without undue force. In
addition, the water-repellent effect of the silicone
seals off the cork and reduces the level of cork
dust in the drink. |
